Horn Book (Thu Apr 01 00:00:00 CST 2004)

These books explain the relationship among twentieth-century fashion, image, and pop culture. The content is interesting, but it's superficially covered and zips by at lightning speed. Stock images, some badly cropped or of uneven quality, are scattered throughout. Some words bold-faced in the text don't appear in the glossary, and there is some unnecessary editorializing. There are six other fall 2003 books in this series. Directory, reading list, timeline. Ind. [Review covers these Twentieth-Century Developments in Fashion and Costume titles: North American Dress, Festivals, Children's Costumes, Men's Costumes, and Women's Costumes.]

Throughout the ages, people of all cultures have had holidays and festivals that give them the chance to dress up in special costumes and disguises. The occasion may be anything from a Carnival procession involving thousands of exotically dressed marchers, a Christmas party with Dad in a Santa suit, or a ceremony marking a high point in the calendar for a particular community or religious group. Whatever the reason for the gathering, the different ways we dress and decorate ourselves for these festivals reveal a lot about the societies that celebrate them and the cultures from which they have emerged -- from ancient hopes and fears to modern fads and fashions. Festivals explores the dramatic, delightful, and even terrifying ways in which people use costume to celebrate important dates and events. Book jacket.
