Horn Book (Wed Jul 06 00:00:00 CDT 2022)

Hypothetical vignettes introduce definitions, descriptions, treatments, and coping strategies for people who have the disorders and diseases and for those interacting with them. Looking and Feeling advocates emotional and physical health. Shorter vignettes incorporated in the text supply examples and interest. Color and black-and-white photographs add visual interest but little else. Bib., glos., ind.

School Library Journal (Wed Jul 06 00:00:00 CDT 2022)

Gr 4-7-These books begin with a description of the characteristics or symptoms that constitute the condition or physical disability and discussions of the causes, both known and speculated. The medical treatments, schooling, and family life of individuals with these conditions are also briefly covered. The language of the books is simple, with medical terms explained both in the texts and in the glossaries. Short personal narratives and comments are italicized and incorporated into both volumes. The books have large print and clearly defined sections. The photographs, mostly black and white, show children and teens engaged in different activities. In Down Syndrome, the author explains the focus of some helpful organizations and Web sites. Cerebral Palsy includes numerous Web sites and online discussion forums. While not "everything" readers may "need to know," these volumes do provide basic introductory information.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
