Each book in this series presents a chronological analysis of a historically important conflict. The reasons behind each conflict are thoroughly discussed, and the effect on todayÆs world is explored. A world view is given as the text explains how other nations affected (and were affected by) each clash. An example is featured in the Anglo-Zulu War volume, which features extensive discussion of the influence of European leaders on the African continent. The history that is discussed appears unbiased. For example, the volume about the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua discusses unethical American activity in aid of the Contras in an unvarnished and complete way. The good and bad points of warring factions in each conflict are discussed, with exploration of corruption and violence as well as societal improvements on both sides of each clash. Additional historical events covered by other books in this series include the Russian, French, Chinese, and Mexican revolutions; the French defeat in Vietnam; and the wars against the Barbary Pirates. The series is visually attractive and is heavily illustrated with color and black-and-white photos. Potentially unfamiliar words are defined within the text as well as in the glossary. Important people, concepts, and events are explained in colorful sidebars. Although these books might not see much leisure use, they will be thorough and efficient resources for report writers. Researchers will find the backmatter in each volume, which includes a chronology and a list of ôWhoÆs Who,ö to be very helpful.ùSherrie Williams.

These were the bold words of Augusto Cesar Sandino, the revolutionary whose name and ideals formed the basis of Nicaragua's Sandinista Revolution (1977-1979). In 1979 the Sandinistas overthrew the corrupt, U.S.-backed Somoza dictatorship, but in many ways, the true revolution was just beginning. The Sandinistas had to rebuild Nicaragua's economic, medical, and educational systems, while simultaneously dealing with repeated attacks from U.S.-backed enemies. The aftermath of the Sandinista Revolution was a lightning rod for multiple civil and global issues, raising questions about the rights of nations to intervene in each other's affairs, the role of the United States in regime changes, and even what the best kind of government is. Follow the revolution from its beginnings in rural Nicaragua at the turn of the twentieth century through the overthrow of the Somozas and the series of international incidents that brought political conflict to countries all over the world.
