Horn Book
This brief introduction to Poland covers topics from history and religious traditions to cuisine and leisure activities. The color photos in a crowded layout are engaging, but the oversized text and captions are corny ("Warsaw, Wow!") and occasionally sloppy ("Poland is full of cool places"). This book is a pared-down version of the same title in the publisher's Globe-Trotters Club series. Bib., glos., ind.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Brightly illustrated and visually appealing series entries. Each book highlights distinguishing features of its particular country. For example, Poland points out the importance of the Vistula River, which extends from the Carpathian Mountains in the south to the Baltic Sea in the north. There is some history, including the ethnic origins of most Poles and the World War II concentration camps, but the majority of the book looks at modern life. Costa Rica also includes a few historical facts as well as a mention of the indigenous population and its culture. The rest of the book discusses such subjects as the rain forest, education, and soccer. These editions are written in language intended for beginning readers. Each two-page chapter includes only the most basic facts in large print. Both incorporate colorful and diverse photos and drawings that will engage children. Useful introductions to life in other countries.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
