Horn Book (Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 CDT 2007)

A spiky-haired green guy with an orange and white striped tie and sneakers guides readers through the human digestive system, pointing out each organ and its function, be it "cool" or "sometimes gross." The gory facts are all there, but breezy writing ("good job, epiglottis"), use of the second person, and cartoon illustrations keep the tone light. Reading list, websites. Bib., glos.

Gr 2-5-This graphically appealing, colorful, and fact-rich "story" describes the importance of food to the body by following an apple as it goes through the human digestion system. While there is no index, it is fairly easy to find information on each stage of digestion, from eating, saliva production, and movement through the esophagus, stomach, and intestines to the happy ending. Abundant, humorous cartoons and clever text handle explanations of belching, passing gas, and diarrhea. This picture book would be useful for reports, but it's more for general interest.-JoAnn Jonas, Chula Vista Public Library, San Diego, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
