Gr 2–4 —A loving portrait of a country currently in conflict, this book explains the geography, history, and culture of Ukraine, including its current war with Russia. Large full-color pictures are included. The tone is upbeat and cheerful, even when writing about difficult topics. At times the hyperbolic language feels out of place in a work of nonfiction. Sunflowers are called "magical" and the country is described as having a "zillion" landscapes. Additional resources are not included; however, a summary of facts, including the Ukrainian alphabet, and an index are present. VERDICT A well-intentioned but occasionally insufficient work of nonfiction. Recommended for large collections or those without current information on Ukraine.—Chance Lee Joyner
All proceeds from the sale of this book are being donated to Ukrainian relief organizations.
