ALA Booklist
This colorful, high-interest Versus! series (6 new titles) puts a new roster of animals to the ultimate test tting them against one another in fictional battles. Following the same format, each book contains four short chapters that introduce the battle, compare the animals' features and abilities, analyze which creature would win, and offer tips to readers wishing to help protect wildlife. While the featured animals share a common attribute, they differ wildly otherwise, leading to very entertaining (and impossible) pairings. Slow Loris vs. Koala presents a "teddy bear brawl" between two cuddly but fierce (when necessary) opponents. In all the volumes, colorful photos and cartoon artwork support fact-filled text, and helpful captions and creative embellishments (to depict comparative size, for instance) create more opportunities to learn. These books are ideal for the younger set as well as readers looking for simple but engaging animal books.
Bibliography Index/Note:
Includes bibliographical references and index.
Climb into the ring, and see if the big-eyed slow loris can stand up to the fuzzy koala. At first glance, it doesn't seem like much of a match-up. But each animal has some amazing features and adaptations. Readers will soon learn that there's a lot more to discuss than just size. From their relative strength to their predator protections, readers will love discovering information about these popular animals through humor and narrative nonfiction text. This is a high-interest topic perfect for all students, but it will be especially engaging for struggling or relucatant readers. Discussion questions are included for futher conversation and debate. A table of contents, glossary with pronunciations, further resources, and an index enhance comprehension for developing readers.
