In this tie-in adventure of the genre-defining mobile RTS Clash of Clans, Terrodicus, aka Terry, doesn't fit in with his fellow hog riders, a homogeneous group of hammer-wielding, Mr. T like brutes on pigback. After shaming himself in a failed attempt to conquer the village of Jazzypickleton, Terry sneaks into town to uncover the secret of its defense, but in Jazzypickleton, where individuality is accepted, he finds himself d must choose between his new home and old loyalties. Yang et al. unquestionably make the most out of this adaptation, employing the logic and tone of the video games to bring an equal measure of fun, nailing the comedy and striking a surprisingly resonant chord along the way. The visual style of the source material makes a natural fit for comics, and the art brings all the madcap goofball energy to life. Fans of the games will delight in its transformation into a fully realized storytelling world, but strangers to the franchise will have a great time, too.
Kirkus Reviews
Nail-biting battles spun off in graphic format from the immensely popular Clash of Clans and Clash Royale video game franchises. In action-crammed panels, Yang makes good on an opening promise of "eye-smackingly good" smashing and bashing by pitting the awesomely muscled, hammer-wielding Hog Riders of Triumphica village against the seemingly defenseless town of Jazzypickleton-where the invaders on their porcine steeds are first met and sent reeling by a giant battle machine. Then, in a rematch, they are battled to a stalemate by an even more powerful secret weapon. It seems that in Triumphica, Barbarians march only with Barbarians, Wizards with Wizards, and so forth, each to their own. But in Jazzypickleton, as diminutive and despised Hog Rider Terrodicus discovers when he creeps in to spy but stays to become part of the mixed and wildly successful Jazzypickleton Cucumbers Royale team, diversity is key to achieving a "win condition." Let the bashing begin! Though the cast comes in an array of typecast Valkyries, Goblins, Minions, Barbarians, and more, the Hog Riders are depicted with brown skin, and the other human-adjacent sorts are shown in a mix of hues. The backmatter features strategy tips for gamers as well as preliminary scenes and sketches.A legendariously legendary kickoff. (Graphic fantasy. 12-15)

Gr 6 Up— Terrodicus (Terry) has never quite fit in with the legendariously legendary Hog Riders of Triumphica. His small stature and tendency to make his own choices on the battlefield lead to him being mocked and bullied by his teammates. His older brother is determined to help him fit in, so he gives Terry an easy quest—destroy the local ramshackle village of JazzyPickleton. When Terry's team is beaten by the village's secret weapon, Terry is determined to win the respect of the Hog Riders by infiltrating JazzyPickleton and discovering how to defeat its troops. But as Terry spends time getting to know the villagers, he realizes that his future could be something different from what he always imagined. Yang pens a raucous graphic novel that captures the feel of the video games Clash of Clans and Clash Royale , without requiring readers to be familiar with either to enjoy this coming-of-age story. Action-packed hilarity, paired with a snarky all-seeing narrator, will keep readers turning pages. While the book unsurprisingly contains a steady level of video game violence, the story would appeal to upper elementary and middle school readers, with the exception of the plethora of f-word jokes scattered throughout the text that seem aimed at older readers (characters repeatedly stop short of saying the word, but the punch line is clear). Human-presenting characters mostly have white skin tones except for the hog riders, who have a variety of darker skin tones. VERDICT This series starter will appeal to video game fans of all ages, with particular interest from middle school graphic novel readers.— Annamarie Carlson
