This slim entry in the Young Heroes series introduces Julia Butterfly Hill, the environmental activist who spent 738 days in a California redwood tree to protest a lumber company's clear-cutting practices. It follows the young activist from her teen years, when she took a stand against abusive classmates and chose a vegetarian diet, to her initial connection with the Earth First movement, her famous "tree sitting" stints, and continued environmental activism. Lynette's lively account zeros in on intriguing details, from the way Hill handled bathing and urination in the tree to earth-friendly practices that readers can emulate. Sharp color photos will further pique interest, and source notes, suggested reading, and a glossary of terms that appear in boldface throughout the text add support.

Julia Lorraine Hill picked up the nickname Butterfly after a butterfly landed on her hand, and stayed there, throughout an entire hike with her family. Readers will learn that Julia's whimsical nickname doesn't quite cover her lofty accomplishments. She is world-known as the young woman who climbed into a tree in 1997, to save it from being destroyed. She lived in that tree, named Luna, for over 700 days, ultimately succeeding in protecting Luna, and the trees within 200 feet of it. Of course, that didn't stop a lunatic from trying to saw through Luna a year later. Fortunately Luna was saved and is braced for survival. Give your readers a chance to open their eyes to what an inspired person can accomplish in order to live in harmony with and to protect Nature.
