K-Gr 1— Early reader titles have the important job of helping children move from enjoying picture books to becoming independent readers. Good ones are engaging and appropriate for the specified reading level. This book features a mixed-race family and is chock-full of colorful illustrations that draw readers in to the daily activities and experiences of parent and child. The child and parent visit the park, an art fair, the farmer's market, and then head home where they cook dinner together. As they travel through their diverse community, the child and parent are surrounded by their neighbors out enjoying a lovely day. There is much to look at, study, and enjoy in every spread. The text, however, is a bit baffling at times. There are many two-word sentences that sometimes make the book feel simplistic for the intended audience. With the text accurately detailing what is being shown in the illustrations and its simple sentence structure, this might make a good choice for ESL students. VERDICT The illustrations tell a much richer story than the text. Not a necessary purchase.— Cassie Veselovsky
It’s fun to spend a day with Mom. A simple Level G story that kindergarteners and first graders can read on their own.
A day with mom is packed with fun! Visit the park, the art fair, the farmer's market, and more. Young readers can enjoy this simply-worded story independently, or cuddle up for some quality mother-child time of their own.
Don’t miss the companion book, My Day with Dad.
This book has been officially leveled by using the Fountas & Pinnell Text Level GradientTM leveling system.
For early-to-mid first grade readers, Level G books feature more complex storylines than prior levels, and a wider variety of structure and punctuation. Illustrations offer support for decoding the more challenging vocabulary words introduced.
The award-winning I Like to Read® series focuses on guided reading levels A through G, based upon Fountas and Pinnell standards. Acclaimed author-illustrators--including winners of Caldecott, Theodor Seuss Geisel, and Coretta Scott King honors—create original, high quality illustrations that support comprehension of simple text and are fun for kids to read with parents, teachers, or on their own!
