Kids coming to the Weird Animal Diets series (4 titles) for a gross-out gorefest will be a bit disappointed by the matter-of-fact presentation of its high-interest topics. However, the material is inherently fascinating, and readers will meet a roster of creatures with taboo (to humans) dining tastes. Each book consists of an introductory chapter followed by three others covering a category of creature or reason for the diet in question, as well as an "Animal Spotlight" spread. Soil-Eating Animals themes its chapters similarly, offering many examples of animals that eat soil to neutralize ingested toxins, calm upset stomachs, and add minerals to their diets. A two-page quiz joins standard back matter in each volume.
