This latest installment in the Food Heroes series explores how a Massachusetts woman-and friend of the author-became a farmer by learning to grow what she enjoyed eating.Inspired by the scent of herbs at a local market, Eva Sommaripa started small by growing parsley, dill, and basil for her family on a parcel of land between the ocean and a forest. Martin's lyrical verse describes the pleasure that Eva experienced: "Tending plants under the blue sky / soil on her hands, birdsong all around, / Eva's best good time." Eventually, she added other greens and herbs, with enough to spare for local chefs and her farm workers' lunches. Eva's curiosity about the life beneath her work boots led to research about the creatures living there, from worms to microbes. Richly textured spreads and spot art, composed of prints and collage elements, illuminate the vital roles of those "critters" and display Eva's "compost buffet," which includes coffee husks and "fish and chips" (seaweed and shells). "Eva's Garden" has now been in business for more than 50 years; her nurturing has expanded to local children and new farmers who come to discover her sustainable methods. The joy Eva finds in the natural world culminates in her annual potluck, held in honor of the solstice. Eva's community is a diverse one. While championing female farmers, this sumptuous book also celebrates discovery and good taste. My friend Eva Sommaripa lives
so close to the ocean she can smell the sea,
so close to the woods she can talk to trees.

She farms one field in Massachusetts.
From that small patch she has grown
a big green garden life
that includes family, friends, neighbors,
creatures that crawl, fly, squawk, slither,
(even invisible microbes), and plants
whose seeds came from China, or Mexico,
or a Massachusetts neighbor.

Eva never planned to be a farmer.
But one morning she saw a pot of fresh tarragon
and a box of strawberries at a small market.
The strawberries were so red,
the tarragon so green and sweet-smelling
Eva knew right then she wanted to grow fresh herbs.

Eva dug and hoed and planted.
She watched, watered, and picked off bugs,
and soon she had
parsley for potatoes,
dill for crunchy pickles,
and basil for tomato sandwiches.

Tending plants under the blue sky,
soil on her hands, birdsong all around,
Eva's best good time.
Food, farming, and nature filled her world.

Picture book biography about the pioneering woman farmer. The fifth of author Jacqueline Briggs Martin's award winning "Food Heroes" series. Farmer Eva Sommaripa founded Eva's Garden in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, a place "so close to the ocean, she can smell the sea, so close to woods she can talk to trees." More than 50 years later she has grown a big green garden life of friends and neighbors, creatures that crawl, fly and slither, eve microbes that create rich soil in the brown underground. Meet farmer Eva, and share the magic, beauty, and science of life on the farm and caring for the land. Farmer Eva's Green Garden Life is one of the first book that focuses on a woman farmer. It is also a story connecting farming with nature, ecology, and science. With an Afterword from Eva, Author's Note, Back Matter and Resource page.
