ALA Booklist (Thu Apr 01 00:00:00 CDT 2010)

True to its title, this book in the Amazing Decades in Photos series presents a variety of engaging photos, posters, newspapers, and other visual materials related to a series of events in the 1910s. These vivid images and their lengthy, informative captions effectively bring the time period to life. The book's focus on a limited number of specific events gives the author the opportunity to explore them in depth. At its best, the book illuminates the origins of the Boy Scouts, Hollywood movies, and the federal income tax, all of which remain important elements in American life today. Unfortunately, some chapters read like a textbook overview. The coverage of immigration, World War I, and dly zz at times falls into this trap. However, the book's spotlight on an often overlooked period of American history helps make even the less compelling chapters educational and useful for student research. A comprehensive index, further reading suggestions, and recommended Web sites add to the book's value.

Gr 4-8 Large, well-chosen black-and-white and color photos are the strongest elements of these books, which each offer approximately 20 chapters covering economics, politics, wars, science, and popular culture. The focus is on U.S. history, but world events that influenced America are also discussed. Captions provide specific information about the photos and supplement, rather than repeat, information in the narratives. Attractive and readable, this series will be popular with browsers and beginning researchers.

The 1910s were a frightening time in the world. Newspaper headlines shouted out tragedy and disaster. The Titanic sank. Mexico and Russia slipped into revolution. A deadly flu virus killed millions. World War I was worse than any previous conflict. People called it the war to end all wars. They were wrong. It was merely the worst tragedy in an age of tragedies, the 1910s. Book jacket.
