K-Gr 3 —Atticus has never seen a tiger, but lucky for him, his friend Alex knows everything about them. In this second installment of "Alex's Field Guides," Alex assists Atticus by highlighting one tiger characteristic at a time, such as big teeth. In his quest for understanding, Atticus brings in everything except the correct animal and asks, "Is this a tiger?" Each time the answer is, "No!" Only after repeated visits does Atticus put it all together and even comes face-to-face with the real thing. The narrative cleverly alternates between first-person narration, speech balloons, and excerpts from the detailed field guide. While older readers might enjoy poring over the richly informative pages, younger ones may find the font size and vocabulary a challenge. Regardless, the story is easy to follow and allows readers to pull information from two different levels of text. The digitally rendered illustrations are vibrant and engaging, perfectly complementing the text. The back matter is a nice touch, featuring a picture gallery of all the animals encountered, further enhancing the learning experience. VERDICT A humorous take not just on tigers but on how to group animals, and a solid addition to elementary library shelves.—Louie Lauer

The second book in a series focused on finding endangered animals or not?
Today, Alex is going to help her friend Atticus spot a real tiger in the wild. Atticus has never seen a tiger before, but Alex knows everything about tigers. Shes even made her own field guide about them, which she uses to explain to Atticus what to look for: stripes, big teeth, nocturnal! But each new fact only leads Atticus to a different (and wrong) animal! When he hopefully asks, Is this a tiger? hes disappointed to discover that, though it meets the criteria, its not! Will these two intrepid explorers ever manage to find a tiger?
This clever picture book series from author and illustrator Elina Ellis provides child-friendly introductions to animal identification, while also serving as a subtle reminder about the disappearance of endangered animals. In each story, Alex shares her knowledge of an endangered animal, while the characters struggle to find one in the wild. With this story, young children will love outsmarting Atticus as they shout No! every time he asks if hes found an elusive tiger. Spreads from Alexs field guide are loaded with tiger facts. Further information about tigers and the other animals that appear in the book are also included. This book promotes critical thinking and age-appropriate conversations about perspective and drawing premature conclusions. It offers excellent tie-ins to life science lessons on the characteristics and diversity of living things.
