Gr 3-5-Of these two books, only Investigators lives up to the promise of its title. Orr identifies the overall context of forensic science, then systematically describes what people in the field do, the tools that they use, and the challenges they face. The author begins with the Lindbergh and O. J. Simpson cases. They are used to ask good questions about the role of the media and celebrity status in treating some crimes differently from others, and she uses the cases to introduce the importance of forensic evidence. Volcanologist focuses more on volcanoes, something many other books do as well or better, than on the work of the scientists. Manatt does devote one chapter to careers and weaves some information about volcanologists' work into the others, but she is vague about what they actually do. Both books have stock photos throughout and inserts entitled "Learning and Innovation Skills," which ask questions requiring critical thinking; "21st Century Content," which tie the specifics of the topic to larger societal issues; and "Life and Career Skills," which tell readers what education and other skills they might need for the career.-Judith V.
