PreS-Gr 2 —Pete and his family take matters into their own hands and decide to make tacos at home. Since there are no traditional taco ingredients in the kitchen, they come up with some unorthodox fillings: marshmallow fluff and jelly beans, or pickles and bananas. Pete's friends get a whiff of the culinary happenings and show up to partake, creating a new tradition for Taco Tuesday. At this point, readers know what to expect from a new "Pete the Cat" book. The illustrations are friendly and colorful, the text simple and straightforward, the plot mild and pleasant. The odd taco creations will gently tickle funnybones and potentially create a dialogue about what readers prefer on their own tacos. Longtime fans will recognize familiar faces: Grumpy Toad, Callie the cat, and platypus Gus. While this latest addition to the substantial Pete canon wouldn't be the most dynamic read-aloud, the language makes this a nice selection for an early reader, especially those with a fondness for the characters. VERDICT Recommended for libraries with a robust collection, especially those where demand for Pete the Cat is high.—Kate Newcombe
