Television shows such as CSI make forensic science a popular subject. The new edition of this encyclopedia first published in 2004 provides a current overview of this complex field. The author is a professor of chemistry and director of forensic and investigative science at West Virginia University. The book contains more than 650 alphabetical entries, more than 80 of which are new to this edition. These include Alchemy; Boyle, Robert; Color and colorants; and DNA wars. The entries range in length from a single paragraph to two pages. Black-and-white photographs, illustrations, and charts supplement the text. Eight color plates in the center of the book contain photographs of shoe prints, bullets under a comparison microscope, and more. Fifteen essays on topics such as "DNA Typing and Privacy" and "Drug Testing in Sports" add depth and show how forensic science is actually used. Three appendixes offer a bibliography and list of Web resources, a list of common abbreviations and acronyms, and the periodic table of elements. This is a current, reasonably priced book that will be useful for public and academic library collections, especially where the previous edition was popular.
