PreS-Gr 1— Simple, rhyming verses capture the fun of two young siblings' Halloween celebration. The story opens with a spread of a Black family at dinner. Seated between their parents, two young siblings have already finished and await their parents' nod of approval. "Gobble supper. Plates are clean! Time to dress for Halloween!" Sister dons her tiger costume, and brother is a robot. Trailed by their parents in matching skeleton costumes, they join a parade of trick-or-treaters. Cartoony digital illustrations add interesting details, such as colorful Halloween costumes and decorations. A party brings the evening to an end, with more treats and fun activities. On their walk home, the tired children face a hoot owl, a black cat, and "creepy shadows." When a child runs up behind them waving a fake bat in their faces, Mom steps in with a reassuring hug. Once home, the siblings sort their candy loot and then go to bed. Text and illustrations work together throughout and attest to warm family ties as they celebrate Halloween. VERDICT A familiar story, but well-crafted and appealing, with playful verse suitable for young readers and illustrations that add fun details. A good choice for one-on-one sharing.— Marilyn Taniguchi
