On their walk home, the tired children face a hoot owl, a black cat, and "creepy shadows." When a child runs up behind them waving a fake bat in their faces, Mom steps in with a reassuring hug. Once home, the siblings sort their candy loot and then go to bed. Text and illustrations work together throughout and attest to warm family ties as they celebrate Halloween.
