Gr 3-6 The "Graphic History" series introduces young readers to events from history in a graphic novel format, making it particularly appealing to reluctant readers. This title (ABDO, 2008) by Joe Dunn gives simple information about the 1969 moon landing. It introduces the problem of the Cold War, the Soviet Union's success in launching Sputnik, and the United States's resolve to lead in the space race. Readers then learn about NASA and the successful mission of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. This interactive book gives users the option of having it read to them or reading it on their own. Each two-page spread of the book is shown. As narration boxes are read by the male narrator at a slow, steady pace, the words and the pictures that accompany them are highlighted. Some words can be clicked for a spoken definition. Some minor sound effects are added. Home, glossary, table of contents, and a review quiz are accessible through the menu. A review quiz at the end of the program tests for comprehension. Moon, 1969. After World War II, tensions were high between the United States and the Soviet Union. Thus began the Cold War, and the battle to be the first to explore space. U.S. and Soviet astronauts were sent on several missions, but on July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 crew won the race. Take a giant step to the moon in this stunning graphic novel. Diagrams, timelines, glossaries, and indexes make these titles an exciting addition to classroom discussion.
