School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up-These two books examine the geography, history, industry, tourist and cultural landmarks, and people of their respective states. Well-chosen, full-color photographs of postcard quality complement the clearly written texts. Occasional comments by citizens enliven the factual content. Information boxes highlight unique achievements and famous people. There are recipes for Massachusetts's Indian pudding and Maryland's famous crabcakes. In each volume, a section entitled "State Survey" includes a listing of facts, a time line, the state song, a calendar of celebrations, and brief biographies of famous individuals. The brief lists for further information contain a few books, CD-ROMs or videos, and Web sites. Both titles are interesting reads as well as fine sources of information that will be useful for reports. They are similar in scope to the "America the Beautiful" series (Children's) and would be welcome additions where materials about states are in high demand.-Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
