Using picture comparisons, Most shows how 20 dinosaurs, some old favorites (such as Tyrannosaurus rex , some newcomers (such as Seismosaurus , measure up to a variety of objects. For example, a Shantungosaurus a duck-billed dinosaur, is pictured as being about 50 ducks long. A basketball court, a bowling alley, a school bus, and a baby crib are some of the other familiar items Most uses in his illustrations. The tone of the text is familiar, also; Most sounds as though he's conversing about old friends. (Reviewed Mar. 1, 1994)

Horn Book

Most relates the size of dinosaurs to things that young children are familiar with--a school bus, supermarket aisle, bulldozer, and so on. The chatty text and colorful, cartoonlike illustrations are sure to appeal to children, while providing them with easily comprehendable facts about their favorite prehistoric creatures.

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-Most takes children's fascination with dinosaurs and applies it to their own world. A Stegosaurus's plates are compared in both shape and size to a school crossing sign. Ankylosaurus is shown waiting in front of a school bus. Diplodocus could simultaneously slam dunk a basketball at both ends of the court with his head and tail. Bright, bold, uncluttered watercolor and pen cartoons with spare text make this book ideal for group sharing as well as independent reading. Simple pronunciation guides untangle the tongue-twisting names while the horizontal format (with a pull-out page) subtly enhances the subjects' bulk. A Most welcome addition to his already impressive dinosaur collection.-Claudia Cooper, Ft. Stockton Independent School District, TX

If Ankylosaurus were alive today, you might be able to ride it to school—after all, it was bigger than a school bus. And if Diplodocus was on your basketball team, you’d always be sure to win the game; his body would stretch the length of the court! In this fact- and fancy-filled book about dinosaurs, Bernard Most shows just how the largest of these prehistoric creatures would measure up in today’s child’s world. A six-page foldout helps show how big the biggest dinosaur really was.
