In this collection of lesson plans for more than 30 picture books, grades K-3, the standards for English-language arts are made concrete. (The standards were developed by the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English in 1996.) Four sections in the book address retelling, comprehension, elements of a story, and author studies. Each lesson plan tells which standards are met and includes skills addressed, exercise objective, appropriate grade level, props and materials required, and closure activities. Line drawings illustrate props and materials. The questions given with many lessons are derived from Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: Handbook I, The Cognitive Domain (1956). This work will be helpful to both librarians and teachers. Many lessons, however, appear too intricate and detailed for the younger members of the intended audience.
