K-Gr 3 These books combine story, information, and activities to teach some basic concepts. Pete focuses on civics, with a class election that introduces nominations, campaigning, debating, platforms, and write-in candidates. In the second title, Colin makes a bet with his brother that he can live as a medieval knight for a week. He eats his food with his fingers, brushes his teeth with a twig, practices his sword fighting at 4 a.m., and treats his parents as his lord and lady. The third and fourth titles teach the value of old items and bartering, respectively. In Whatcha Got? Megan loves to watch Very Vintage on TV. When the production comes to her town, she takes things that belonged to her grandmother to find their true worth. In No Money? Amy knows that her 52 cents will not be enough to purchase the newest video game and finds a way to trade for a friend's copy. All four books work well at relaying the specific concepts through an amusing story sequence. As each scenario unfolds, fact boxes interspersed within the humorous cartoon illustrations explain principles, vocabulary, and historical details. A section at the end of each title offers a summary of the concept and some related activities. Good choices for second/third-grade classrooms or as read-alouds for the kindergarten/first-grade set. Well done. Rita Soltan, Oakland University, Rochester, MI
