Horn Book

These books fail to provide enticement to or information about these careers. Choppily written sentences serve as captions for the unattractive and frequently pointless color photos. (In one instance, a comment on nurses making patients feel comfortable--"A smile really helps!"--accompanies a picture of an unsmiling nurse.) Although the text appears in a large, bold font, much of the vocabulary is difficult.

PreS-Gr 2-These three series titles take a close-up look at teachers, nurses, and truck drivers. While the texts are uninspired, they are informative. The full-color photographs, depicting a wide range of ethnically diverse people interacting in many different situations, will hold the attention of young readers. These selections would be good to use in conjunction with others books to present different occupations to youngsters. Most appropriate for classroom use, they will be best selected for public and school libraries. M.O.B.
