Newly illustrated in full color, Hoff's popular I Can Read story, first published in 1959, keeps the simple lines and energy of the original art. The colors are quiet, but it's fun to see the yellow taxi and the diverse classroom and the hippo with a great, red open mouth. In this account of a salamander's life cycle, a larva hatches from an egg, avoids predators, grows into an adult, mates, lays eggs, hunts, and hibernates. While the very simple text does give basic information about the topic, the salamander and other animals look almost cuddly in the illustrations dominated by dark greens and browns. A brief introduction offers advice on salamander watching. Glos.
