Each chapter in this 10 Days series book focuses on a pivotal event in the biographee's life. In the volume on Lincoln, Colbert uses the 10 events to bring drama to the narrative and, more significantly, to open the discussion of ideas and issues. The chapter dated the day Lincoln's mother's died explores not just that event but also how the boy's childhood and this significant loss may have forged his character. The chapter on the Gettysburg Address shows that Lincoln saw the events of his time in a broader context than most of his contemporaries. Source notes for quotes and a selected bibliography are appended. Captioned black-and-white reproductions of period paintings, photos, prints, and documents illustrate the book. Though the quality of the rough paper makes some of them look a bit drab, others are quite effective. This clearly written and unusually lively nonfiction paperback will appeal to young history and biography fans. Two other recent volumes in the series spotlight Michelle Obama and Martin Luther King Jr.
