ALA Booklist

This title in the spotty Rookie Read-about Holidays series offers a very basic introduction to the festival of light that marks the Hindu new year. Extremely simple text, with bold print on white backgrounds, explains that while Diwali is celebrated all over the world, it is India's biggest holiday. A few spreads show some of the lights, dancing, and food items typically associated with the holiday, and there is a mention of Rama, the ancient prince honored during the five-day festival. The spare text will leave children with only a vague sense of what the holiday is about, but the mostly sharp color photos offer interesting glimpses of the celebration, and there are very few titles available on the subject. This can serve until something better comes along.

This fact-filled Rookie Read-About Holiday book introduces the youngest readers (Ages 3-6) to Diwali.
