Like earlier titles in the long-running Introducing Issues with Opposing Viewpoints series, these are excellent resources both for student research and for personal interest in controversial topics. Each book collects short essays or articles together to present different sides of an argument, along with questions to draw readers into the text, and concludes with facts designed to help students write papers: relevant statistics, dates, and document excerpts. Torture discusses the ethics of state-approved torture, particularly of terrorism suspects, and covers the Geneva Conventions, the death penalty, and whether torture produces good information. The series' strong point may also be its weak point: giving both sides equal weight on issues where scientific opinion points strongly in one direction; however, by encouraging students to read both sides, this series also encourages further research.

Young readers will be allowed a chance to think critically about the topic of torture. Essays are assembled in a for-or-against sequence across three chapters as they debate whether torture is ever justified, what qualifies as torture, and what the U.S. policy on torture should be.
