Taking Stolarz's Blue Is for Nightmares series into the graphic-novel realm is a bold idea, and it pays off in this morbidly entertaining and surprisingly romantic page-turner. Stacey and Jacob both have nightmares in which they see the future, but even this kind of foresight wasn't able to keep them together. She is a freshman in college; he is living far away in a Colorado ski town. In alternate sections, the stories-within-stories recap of their past relationship well as the various crimes and deaths related to their visions a graphic-novelist's dream. Gorrissen's cluttered black-and-white art reflects the schizophrenia of Stacey's and Jacob's lives (one part wooing, two parts murderous mayhem) and takes full advantage of unusual panel construction and clever sidebars, including paper-doll-style introductions (complete with tabbed, swappable clothes) of important characters. The story's weirdo flashes of humor make the darkness bearable, as do the everyday settings of a pizza parlor and dorm room. A unique and somewhat unhinged blend of realism and fantasy.
It's happening again... The BLUE IS FOR NIGHTMARES series that put a spell on more than half a million readers continues - in graphic novel format! Prophetic dreams. Near-brushes with death. Killers pursuing her and her friends. Stacey Brown knows that being a hereditary witch isn't all it's cracked up to be. Stacey's nightmares are back. And all she wants to do is go to Colorado and work things out with Jacob, who hasn't been able to remember her since he lost his memory in his brush with death. But before Stacey and Jacob can have a future, they must face their pasts. Black is for Beginnings reveals the never-before-seen backstory--and what lies ahead--for the young, spellcasting lovers.
