Gr 4-8-The illustrations in these slim volumes are a real strength. Subjects addressed in two-page spreads include Pakistan's geography, customs, religions, agriculture, industry, festivals, city and country life, and arts. Each of the briefly covered topics is accompanied by several full-color photos; in addition, there are occasional reproductions, drawings, and black-and-white archival photos. The clear section headings and the straightforward texts will help students access information. People makes brief mention of Afghan refugees who crossed the border after the U.S. began the war against terrorists in Afghanistan in 2001, but largely ignores the ongoing differences between Pakistan and India. William Goodwin's Pakistan (Lucent, 2002) and Sean Sheehan's Pakistan (Benchmark, 1993) are aimed at slightly older readers. One would need to purchase all three of Black's volumes to provide a picture of Pakistan yesterday and today.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
