While children's books on animals often talk about endangered species, each volume in the new Back from the Brink series features 12 animals that have made a comeback. This book offers the stories of giant pandas, Utah prairie dogs, black-footed ferrets, Florida panthers, gray wolves, red wolves, island foxes, Key deer, American bison, southern white rhinoceroses, grizzly bears, and Siberian tigers. In each case, conservation efforts such as legal protection, captive breeding programs, relocation, and medical intervention have enabled them to survive and increase their numbers. A double-page spread presents each animal's story though a few paragraphs of text, a couple of sharply reproduced photos, and a fast-fact box. Though written in short sentences (usually with fewer than 15 words), the text flows well and includes solid, brief introduction to the animals' endangerment or near extinction as well as its more hopeful recent past. An attractive addition to library collections.
