K-Gr 4 With the specific focus on threats to the animals' survival, each of these titles provides a good introduction to the reasons they are endangered. In addition to basic background information for each animal, including physical description, species and types, diet, habitat, and reproduction, the author presents readers with a look at the circumstances that have led to its current status. The large, colorful photographs will immediately draw attention to these titles, while the inset maps, "Wild Fact" text boxes (e.g., "The warmth of the sand decides whether a [sea turtle's] egg will become a male or female sea turtle"), and color-blocked captions supplement the basic texts. The clear, easy-to-understand language presents a difficult topic in a child-friendly manner. Each book ends with a hopeful look to the future by examining the efforts of conservation and preservation groups working to save the animals. Bibliography Index/Note:
Includes bibliographical references and index.
Though many people are familiar with the cantankerous cartoon character, few people know much about the real-life Tasmanian devil. Tasmanian devils are found only on an island south of Australia. Though they are grouchy and feisty, theyd rather make a lot of noise than fight. Unfortunately, there is nothing comical about the current situation of this increasingly rare marsupial. After being hunted almost to extinction, the remaining population has been decimated by disease. Readers will learn what is being done to save the Tasmanian devils, and will grow a lasting appreciation for this unique animal.
