These titles in the America's Industrial Society in the 19th Century series offer high interest-low vocabulary explanations of mandated social studies topics. Oil, Steel, and Railroads describes the building of the transcontinental railroad, Andrew Carnegie's contributions to steel manufacturing, and the development of the oil industry. Possibilities and Problems discusses the evolution of factories that led to a migration to cities, overcrowded urban areas, poor working conditions in industry, and the growth of labor unions. Both books feature succinct large-print text, short chapters, and frequent period illustrations. A few of the illustrations could have been sharper, but they are fully captioned, which will help the intended audience understand what they are viewing. The series touts the inclusion of primary sources, but the appended primary source list is for images only. Each book also has a glossary and a link to the publisher's Web site, where a list of additional sites can be found. Give these to reluctant readers or children having difficulty comprehending the regular classroom texts.
