With clipped dialogue and rapidly changing dramas about friends, enemies, sports, family, and girlfriends in an inner-city neighborhood, this title in the publisher's District 13 line will appeal to reluctant readers who want brief, simply worded stories that reflect their lives now. Starting with the cover image of a basketball court, the book unfolds through the viewpoint of Akil, 14, who is thrilled that his childhood friend, Patrice, is moving back to his building after being away for two years. When Patrice arrives, Akil is amazed that she is now tall and gorgeous and can complete a perfect jump shot. But he is jealous that his friend Tre is also hot for Patrice and angry that a school bully, Deena, is after her. Life becomes even more complicated after Akil's uncle loses his job and moves in with Akil and his single, working mom. With so many characters packed into 52 pages, this action-filled story may be just right for readers' theater.

They all walked to the court. Uncle Robert passed the ball to Patrice. She stepped toward the baseline. She looked so natural. She shot the ball. Nothing but net. Akil's jaw dropped. "Can you do that again?" The answer was yes. Finding the "right book" for struggling learners is essential to build both confidence and proficiency. Reading supports must be seamless, so that struggling readers are not stigmatized. The District 13 series does just that--written using carefully chosen vocabulary and simple sentences, the novels offer compelling teen stories about characters that interest young adult readers. Using sports as a backdrop, these edgy and mature titles confront issues that are of great importance to urban teens, especially teenaged boys: Coming of age, dating, fitting in, friendships, drugs, self-esteem, and school. Straightforward plots move readers through the 48-pages of text quickly and efficiently with satisfying resolutions.
