Focusing on survival tactics in extreme environments, these titles blend facts about animals and inhospitable locations. Information organization varies between titles--Deserts describes behaviors, while Cold thoroughly investigates specific animals. Each title includes a simple experiment. Unfortunately, dry text, overly complex vocabulary, inconsistent topic coverage, and sometimes misplaced photographs don't fulfill the thrilling promise of the titles. Reading list, websites. Gr 2-4 These surveys of harsh climes and some of the animals that live in them feature plenty of crowd-pleasing examples, ranging from squids, both giant and colossal, found in the deep sea to vampire bats and giant bat-eating centipedes found in caves. However, readers will be misled or confused by the fact that many more creatures are mentioned than depicted in the color photos and by semi-truthful claims, such as the statement that dromedaries, one-humped camels, originated in North America (only their distant ancestors did) or that brown bears don't really hibernate.

The ocean is one of the most extreme environments on Earth. The deepest ocean zones challenge animal survival in unique ways. When light and warmth totally disappear, when pressure can crush most bodies, and when food is extremely rare, how do deep-sea animals cope? Scientists have sent remotely operated vehicles to the sea floor to capture images and videos of these amazing creatures in hopes of answering these questions. Their expeditions have revealed amazing information about extreme deep-sea animals.
