Gr 3-6-Clear photos and drawings help explain concepts in these books. Each title starts with a definition, followed by explanations of measuring, estimating, imperial versus metric systems, and the ways people use measurement. One simple hands-on activity, such as playing with clay to demonstrate how volume stays the same even when the shape is changed or measuring the area of a room using sheets of paper, allows students to practice what they've learned. Page variations including colored blocks of additional information help keep readers from being overwhelmed. Nonetheless, they may need adult guidance. For example, in Volume, it's noted that "1 cubic yard, or 27 cubic feet = 36 inches x 36 inches x 36 inches = 46,656 cubic inches." No explanation is given as to where the 27 cubic feet comes from, or why it is important in this equation. Teachers may find these books to be useful complements to other titles, but chances are children will prefer Stuart J. Murphy's Bigger, Better, Best! (2002) and David M. Schwartz's Millions to Measure (2003, both HarperCollins).-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

In order to build a house or paint a room, builders must know an important measuring concept: finding area. Using accessible explanations and illustrations, readers will be introduced to the simple formula for finding area using length and height. Strategies to solve finding area of irregular shapes as well as simple squares and triangles are discussed, including concepts such as pi and measuring a pie. Fun math problems featured throughout encourage readers to apply what they've learned. Budding contractors can then put their new knowledge to work in a fun concluding activity.
