Horn Book
In this second book ostensibly authored by Derek the Ghost, a monster princess falls in love with Scary School pupil Charles Nukid, and her father wants him dead for it. Too-frequent references to web tie-in material, ridiculous plot twists, and grating name choices mar this mildly amusing series about the adventures (and horrors) of a monster school. Black-and-white sketches provide most of the humor.

Gr 3-6 This second book in the series finds the students-some human, some not-on a field trip to Albania to meet the Monster King. In the process, Charles Nukid (the only one to actually wear the school uniform) becomes engaged to marry a monster princess, much to his annoyance. Disaster seems inevitable as the wedding approaches and an army of monsters plans to attack Scary School, but a few last-minute twists tie everything up neatly. Throughout the book, the promise of gore meets very little follow through, and the odd collection of teachers and students, while entertaining, is confusing. Broadly humorous, black-and-white exaggerated cartoons appear throughout. The story takes "off the wall" to a new level, to the point that it becomes tough to follow. Purchase only where Scary School (HarperCollins, 2011) is popular. Amanda Struckmeyer, Middleton Public Library, Madison, WI

In this second book in the Scary School series, the students of Scary School are off to Monster Forest.
School may be scary, but the forest has a few frights of its own, including bearodactyls; Captain Pigbeard, fearsome leader of the Monster-Pirates; and his fiancée, Princess Zogette. When Zogette falls in love with Charles and follows him to Scary School, Captain Pigbeard raises his army in pursuit. But what the monster army doesn’t realize is that the teachers and students of Scary School are even more frightening than anything in the Monster Forest.
Fans of the Intergalactic Bed and Breakfast series and the Bailey School books will love the way the Scary School series for middle-grade readers mixes spooky scares and laughs.
