The brief introduction in this entry in the Time for Kids series is packed with essential facts, thought-provoking questions, and engaging illustrations about art. Apodaca is an illustrator and Serwich is a puppeteer, and together they have created this practical, yet engaging, little book. They begin with this quote from Picasso: Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. Using text and illustration, they introduce various art media, and then it's on to what to paint, where to paint, and what tools you'll need. Interesting facts abound; for example, Meet Roy G. Biv is the mnemonic device for learning the colors on the color wheel. Art styles, famous artists and museums, art shows and exhibits, and an interview with an artist round out the body of the book. This is not a how-to book; rather, it is a solid overview of art that fills a nice general niche. A great first book for an upper elementary art class.
