ALA Booklist

In the third episode of five in the Escape from Furnace series, near-future teen inmate-narrator Alex at last escapes the vile underground prison and experimental laboratory of Furnace t not before extreme doses of surgical and chemical torture that nearly turn him into one of the prison's feared superguards; massive splatters of blood and other fluids; ugly revelations about the prison's origins; and a titanic, gruesome climactic battle. Familiarity with previous volumes is a must, and, as before, the high level of violence and the intensity of both language and imagery will test even strong-stomached readers.

Horn Book

More death and destruction surround Alex (Lockdown, Solitary) as he's subjected to biological transformations by the warden. As one of the silver-eyed, black-suited monsters, he must decide how to use his power. Thin on character development and moral complexity, the book thrives on violent battles between good and evil, ornamented with a few nods to the value of friendship.

Kirkus Reviews

Alex Sawyer has just received his third strike, attempting to escape from the underground penitentiary known as Furnace (Solitary: Escape from Furnace 2, 2010), and is about to learn the secret origins of the prison staff. After being surgically implanted with muscles and pumped full of the mysterious substance known as "nectar," Alex struggles to retain his humanity as his body is challenged with endurance tests and his mind is twisted by the warden's whispering. He resists but ultimately succumbs to his new interior darkness and accidentally kills an old friend before being rescued by Simon and Zee for a final daring escape from the horrific prison. With this third installment in the Escape from Furnace series, Smith strikes the ideal balance between action and introspection. Readers will feel flashes of genuine sympathy for antihero Alex, especially as he struggles against becoming the monster he has always feared lurks inside. With survival challenges, a battle and a prison uprising, the novel keeps the adrenaline level high and the pages turning. A World War II plot twist may strike readers as coming from left field, but the series has always been more about action and suspense than anything else. One thing's for sure: There's still plenty of action still to come out of Furnace. (Thriller. 12 & up)

FromDeath Sentence:

I felt the needle in my arm, and something cold rushed into my veins. I knew exactly what it was, I’d seen it before on Gary, on Donovan—a drip full of evil, not quite black, not quite silver, with specks of starlight floating in its dark weight. It was the warden’s poison, the stuff that turned you into a monster.
I tried to fight it, to buck my body until the needle came out, but the pain was too great and I could feel the leather straps holding me tight against the infirmary bed. The panic grew like a living thing in my chest and I made one last mental effort to escape, to leave my flesh behind and vanish like smoke. But the liquid nightmare flowed into me like molten lead, filling my veins and arteries and weighing me down. And it’s impossible to escape anything when the chains are inside you.
It was only a matter of seconds before it reached my brain. To my surprise it numbed the agony . . . For a blissful instant I felt nothing, then the floodgates opened and something far worse than physical pain burst into my head.
This time I managed to scream.
It was as if the warden had ridden into my mind on the wave of poison, because I could swear his voice came from inside my skull.

In the third book in the Escape from Furnace series, Alex struggles to survive the bloody, brutal laboratories beneath Furnace Penitentiary, where monsters are made . Alex's second attempt to break out of Furnace Penitentiary failed. This time, his punishment will be much worse than before. Because in the hidden, bloodstained laboratories beneath the prison, he will be made into a monster. As the warden pumps something evil into his veins--a sinisterly dark nectar--Alex becomes what he most fears . . . a superhuman minion of Furnace. How can he escape when the darkness is inside him? How can he lead the way to freedom if he is lost to himself?
