On a car trip with his parents, 17-year-old Theo spots a beautiful young woman at the motel swimming pool. She turns out to be Theo's former babysitter, Ronnie, who is traveling with her toddler, Zach. Awed by her beauty and frustrated by his parents' lack of trust in him, Theo quickly accepts her invitation to share the drive to Hollywood. Once there, Ronnie takes advantage of Theo's infatuation by leaving Zach with him for a full day while she goes on a drinking binge. Theo gradually sorts through Ronnie's lies, learns about her drinking problem, and realizes that he is fortunate to have protective, caring parents. This sudden revelation and Ronnie's equally quick decision to finally address her drinking problem strain credibility. The first-person narrative and reliance on dialogue (with occasional profanity) make this suitable fare for reluctant readers, but they may find the old-fashioned cautionary tale quaint.
Horn Book
Fed up with his parents, seventeen-year-old Theo ditches their family vacation for a Hollywood road trip with his former babysitter, Ronnie, and her son. Theo finds himself in over his head, however, when he realizes that Ronnie isn't telling him the whole truth. Reluctant readers will appreciate the straightforward writing style and mature exploration of kidnapping and alcoholism.

From behind the mirrored lenses of my sunglasses, I snuck yet another peek at the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.
Her wet hair was slicked back from her face, a white towel was draped across her tanned shoulders, and her long bare legs were stretched out in front of her. Whoever she was, she was breathtaking. And there she was, in a red bikini, sitting three plastic lounge chairs away from me.

It's an ordinary nightmare of a family trip until Theo realizes that the beautiful girl beside the hotel pool is his childhood babysitter—and his first crush. Theo hasn't seen Ronnie for five years, but when she invites him to go with her—and her toddler son, Zach—on a road trip, he leaps at the opportunity to ditch his parents and head to Hollywood. They've only gone a few miles before Theo begins to regret his impulsive decision. Zach cries nonstop, and when they get pulled over by the police, Ronnie is clearly terrified. She says her ex-boyfriend is a cop and that he is looking for her. Theo wants to trust her, but he suspects she is hiding something. And when they reach Los Angeles and she disappears, leaving him to look after Zach, he needs to find out the truth—and decide where his loyalties lie.
