Sackier's debut novel stars Opal, a smart and funny 13-year-old who has lost her way. The story begins in darkness, as Opal searches for midnight snacks to satisfy her cravings. Her father died two years ago, and she and her family (mother, little brother Ollie, and grandfather) have struggled ever since. Sackier does an impressive job of incorporating heavy subjects, such as death, obesity, and bullying, into a well-paced narrative about growing up. Central to this success is Opal, who calls herself Opl for her new blog because it takes up less space: if she can't lose weight, her name can. As a narrator, she is bluntly opinionated but ends up questioning many of these opinions. Not fond of physical activity, she agrees to try yoga. A devotee of junk food, she transforms herself into a healthy chef. If some of these changes seem quick and unproblematic in summary, Sackier's novel contains strong secondary characters, such as her gruff-seeming but lovable grandfather, and believable detours.
