Starred Review In a flash of light, all 437 students and 52 teachers of Bay Point Preparatory High School are transported to a forested alien world, filled with strange creatures that attack without mercy. While the faculty and students come to grips with the reality of their situation, a small group of teens ventures farther into the woods, determined to find a way out and understand why they were brought to this world. Tynion pulls no punches as he puts these kids through hell, and in the few moments they are allowed to stop to take a breath, they reveal very unique and original personalities, making them less like horror stereotypes and more like real, breathing kids. This only adds to the horror, as we can't help but become genuinely invested, hoping for the students to claw their way out. It's a remarkable achievement in economy that these interludes between action, though brief, carry so much emotional weight and inflect the narrative with meaningful emotional stakes. Dialynas' heavy outlining and neon color palette create a bizarre land rife with danger and heavy in adventure. With such a powerful start, this is one of the best new series you are not reading.
None of that matters any more..
On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. As fans of James Tynion IV’s work in the Batman universe (BATMAN ETERNAL, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. Plus, THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, small-town horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel. If you’re fan of teen conspiracy comics like MORNING GLORIES, SHELTERED, and REVIVAL, you’ll immediately be sucked into THE WOODS.
