One mistake. Now, to clear his record, Javvan must successfully meet the requirements set by the court: keep his grades up and find a job. Unfortunately, all he's gotten from 22 interviews is, "Thank you, Mr. Malhotra. We'll call you." He knows they won't. After each interview he must report to his probation officer, Mary, where he dreads hearing her favorite word, recidivism. Just when Javvan's at his wit's end, Mary suggests a construction job with her friend Kevin. It doesn't take Javvan long to suspect Kevin of shady practices and to know Mary is involved. Who can Javvan tell? Who will believe him? His younger brother, a budding magician, plays a crucial part, as does a policewoman who sees hope for him. As is typical of most Orca books, this is a fast-paced, high-interest offering for reluctant young adult readers. Here, too, are serious lessons to learn: how to be responsible, knowing whom to trust, and how the restorative-justice process works.
