Gr 2-8 Anyone who has tried to find and stage plays for children knows that both endeavors are challenging. Here is a book aimed at those working with children in the elementary grades that not only contains workable scripts but also directions for conducting rehearsals, building props, and creating costumes. Scripts are printed in both English and Spanish, some are bilingual, and one is for a multigenerational cast. The subjects have child appeal, whether resetting "Cinderella" in modern times, helping a princess become multilingual, or dealing with a bully. Most plays are comprised of about five scenes, with a running time of 20 to 30 minutes, though some are shorter. The generally sprightly dialogue is complex enough to present a positive challenge for the intended audience, and the final lengthy play, Don Quijote in America , employs a large cast and is suitable for summer theater. Each of the 10 plays is preceded by drawings of props and/or costumes as well as music for any songs and is followed by a vocabulary list, including nouns, adjectives, and verbs used in the play. This excellent resource takes a soup-to-nuts approach and includes advice on building a theater program from scratch. Preferable to Lori M. Carlson's You're On! Seven Plays in English and Spanish (Morrow, 1999) in terms of both staging instructions and quality of the scripts, this is a winner for any school supportingor wanting to supporta drama program.
This versatile book from Master Teaching Artist Resurreccion Espinosa features 10 full-length plays in English and Spanish. Some plays are bilingual, and one is written for a multigenerational group. Tested in both inner-city and suburban schools, the plays dramatically improve reading and speaking skills; more than that, they promote creativity, team work, and self-confidence. Equally accessible to Spanish-dominant and English-dominant students, each play includes a list of essential vocabulary words that will enhance every student's language abilities!
