When high-school-senior Jake Burnett gets an offer to play basketball for elite Centerville Prep, it seems too good to be true. Coach Stone promises the world p-notch dorm facilities, grade-A dining halls, scouts at the games, and plenty of court time. The reality, though, is quite different: playing is great, but Jake is living in an unsupervised house with the other players, eating canned food, and being forced to miss classes. Should he confront Coach Stone, or will that end his basketball career before it begins? This entry in the Orca Sports line is another fast-paced, high-stakes, high/low book with plenty of appeal for reluctant readers and sports fans alike. Although some of the plot points may require suspension of disbelief, Rud's experience as a sports journalist and a high-school basketball coach lends authenticity to the action-packed court scenes, and in a readable and accessible way, he takes on complex issues like integrity, breach of contract, and speaking out against corruption.
