This beautifully illustrated volume in the publisher's Eyewitness series addresses the huge subject of the science, technology, and use of energy. Each of its page spreads demonstrates one specific dimension of energy's nature, use, or a combination of the two. From defining energy and distinguishing among various types, such as chemical, magnetic, potential, and kinetic, to clear descriptions of the development of fission, biomass fuels, and fire, the coverage here is pretty vast. The author covers energy conservation and use on a global scale, the dynamics of food energy, the function of the sun, the history of fossil fuels, and interstellar communications, among many other topics. The plentiful and eye-catching color photos, on magazine-style pages, help illustrate many of the concepts at hand, while some tidy visual metaphors communicate more sophisticated, abstract theories. Other images depict cutaways and other graphic support for complex ideas and facts. Though it lacks a list of further resources, the back matter includes a well-designed time line and a robust glossary. Great for school, yes, but energizing for browsers as well.
