Tuna salad? Yuck!

School Library Journal

K-Gr 3- These very basic series titles are designed to introduce geopolitical concepts. Each book has one sentence per page, accompanied by a bright, full-color photograph. Beginning readers should be able to master the 17 sentences in each book quickly and thereby obtain a measure of success. However, the writing is simplistic and doesn't provide much insight into what makes a continent a continent, a country a country, or a state a state. Combining all three books into one would have been more helpful to compare geopolitical concepts and would not have taxed third-grade readers. Nevertheless, these books are attractive and will fill a niche for those who insist on introducing these concepts to kindergartners. To gain a more in-depth understanding of the continents, see the National Geographic Beginner's World Atlas (National Geographic, 1999). For a simple introduction to our place in the universe, try Margery Cuyler's From Here to There (Holt, 1999). Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL
