WILSON, Sean Michael . Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: The Graphic Novel: QuickText . pap. ISBN 978-1-907127-10-6 . ea. vol: illus. by Declan Shalvey, et al. 168p. Classical Comics . 2012. PLB $24.95; pap. $16.95. Gr 1-0 Up Based on the original installment of the Sweeney Todd saga that appeared in 1846/'47 in The People's Periodical and Family Library , these graphic novels bear little resemblance to the story as it unfolded as a stage musical and movie with which many readers will be familiar. Basics of the story-murderous barber disposes of victims' bodies in Mrs. Lovett's meat pies-are there, but much of the rest of the narrative will be unfamiliar. Told in a leisurely manner, the action and suspense build to a satisfying conclusion. The illustrations follow comic rather than manga conventions, and the coloring is muted and atmospheric, befitting both the time period and subject matter. The lettering is clear and easily read in both the original and modern English versions. The language of the Victorian original will appeal only to strong readers, whereas the modern English version is much more accessible to a general audience. Even so, this is a graphic novel that will have limited appeal due to the subject matter, and it is a stretch to call it a classic, unlike the titles in the rest of the series. Purchase is strictly additional, unless there is a demand for all types and genres of graphic novels. Suanne Roush, Osceola High School, Seminole, FL
TODD
Well, gentlemen, shaved, or cut, or dressed, I am at your service; which shall I begin with?
Colonel
It's rather a remarkable circumstance, but this is a very sagacious dog, you see, and he belongs to a friend of ours, who has most unaccountably disappeared.
TODD
Has he, really?
Tobias! – Run to Mr. Philip's, in Cateaton-street, and get me six-penny-worth of preserved figs.
Captain
Has anyone with the appearance of an officer in the navy came to your house?
TODD
Oh! to be sure, he came here, and I shaved him and polished him off.

No one knows for sure if Sweeney Todd actually existed, but this story, taken from a serialization in a Penny Dreadful from 1846, was the first official record of the terrible crimes committed by the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Gory? No! What's particularly good about this adaptation is that none of the horror is to be seen -- making this a truly wonderful version of a brilliant book. This story first appeared in serialized form in 1800s London and gripped the nation. Although there is no explicit record of these events taking place, there is overwhelming anecdotal evidence that Todd existed and that he was the world's worst mass-murderer. A gruesome tale, portrayed with a certain Victorian "twee-ness" that borders on the comical. Featuring beautiful engaging artwork, the book features the entire novel, unabridged (in the original British English), as well as an illustrated Character List (Dramatis Personae), 156 pages of story artwork, and fascinating support material - all beautifully presented in color. An alternative text edition with simplified U.S. dialogue is available enabling differentiation in the classroom.
