The Postcard is the first in Lewis's Pennsylvania Amish series about Rachel Yoder, a devoted mother and happily married woman until the day a speeding motorist plows into the family's horse-drawn cart and renders her a widow. To make ends meet, Rachel works at a bed-and-breakfast catering to tourists. As Lewis capably shows, the Amish community in Lancaster County is endangered by tourism, which causes crafts to be more profitable than farming and changes the community's internal structures. Rachel meets a worldly journalist, Philip Bradley, and love stirs. But since Rachel cannot abandon her faith, can Philip find happiness on the farm? Think of Harrison Ford in his 1985 film, the improbable Witness, and you'll have the idea.
