When young readers think of the world's most formative historical leaders, scientists, and athletes, they probably do not picture women like Wilma Rudolph, Sally Ride, and Florence Nightingale. In seven thematic chapters, some of the most influential women from both past and present are chronicled here in brief biographical sketches. Per DK's revised, tiered levels, this reader is suitable for students who are confident reading independently, and it provides plenty of contextual support for synthesizing nonfiction text, such as colorful graphics, questions that check for understanding, time lines, and sidebars. The subjects of the book represent a great diversity in time, place, and area of influence, but all of them demonstrate that one person, regardless of gender or social standing, can make a tremendous positive impact on the world around them.

Short sections of text, leveled for "reading alone" and accompanied by lots of photos, introduce an inspiring group of women with noteworthy accomplishments, including scientists, athletes, artists, and business figures, both past and present. A diverse range of cultural backgrounds and ethnicities is represented. The biographical details are cursory, but they may spark further interest in specific individuals. Glos., ind.

Gr 2-5A volume spotlighting groundbreaking female leaders, explorers, artists, scientists, and more. Opening with a powerful quote from Malala Yousafzai ("There's a moment when you have to decide whether to be silent or stand up."), the work profiles numerous women who have bravely and boldly fought to make a difference throughout history. Divided into seven chapters, the book examines environmentalist Wangari Maathai, politician Aung San Suu Kyi, and adventurer Malavath Poorna, who scaled Mount Everest when she was just 13 years old. The welcoming layout includes an abundance of color photographs and large, clear text. The book's readability and format will make it a hit with browsers and students writing reports alike. VERDICT This smart chapter book collection of female innovators will be at home in most libraries serving children.Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diego
